It’s back-to-school time in Haiti.
For SAKALA staff that means sitting down with parents and registering hundreds of children to make sure they have tuition and social support to go to school, with all the opportunity and hope a good education brings with it.
Given the extremely difficult conditions in Haiti owing to political violence and economic insecurity, seeing ordinary pictures of children doing their homework during SAKALA’s after-school tutoring program is, well, extraordinary.
Let me share some of those with you now.
This is just from the first week or so of classes. Because of the insecurity in Haiti, some schools have not opened yet, others will open and close based on daily conditions. At SAKALA, the after-school program, which includes a nutritious meal, runs Monday through Friday whether the schools are open that day or not.
It is your support and solidarity from all over the world that makes all these extraordinary ordinary scenes of learning possible and we are so grateful.
